Toscana, agosto 1944: os Aliados acabaram de entrar em Florença, numa Itália devastada pela guerra, e as pessoas estão com fome. "Dieci", que afirma ter sido um boxer e um gerente, reúne um grupo de homens jovens, a fim de organizar lutas de boxe para conseguir algo para comer. Enquanto estão indo para Monteriggioni em um caminhão velho, Diece resgata o negro norte-americano, o soldado Washington, das mãos de uma família italiana. Mais tarde, ele convida a fascista Rosa, que teve seu cabelo cortado como um homem para mostrar que ela era uma traidora, para se juntar ao grupo. Quando eles se encontram com uma tropa de soldados norte-americanos, eles são convidados a se apresentarem em sua base. De volta à estrada, eles encontram Wilma, que pede uma carona e os convida a uma festa de casamento. Durante a viagem, eles aprendem lições de vida, amizade e traição.
