Prolific commentator at the BBC during the 1940s and 1950s, narrating live coverage of the Coronation in 1953. In 1955, Smith became the BBC's head of department for outside broadcasts. He moved to Southern Television in 1958 and would spend the rest of his career representing private television companies, including a 6-year stint as head of the ICTA secretariat (1976-1984).
