Ethel is a 60-year-old psychoanalyst who chose to access documents declassified by the Uruguayan goverment to know the identity of the perpetrators of the death of her husband. His death occured on August 17th 1961 at a University ceremony where Che Guevara delivered one of his first speeches after the revolutionary triumph of the Cuban revolution. The bullet that killed a history teacher was considered a failed attack against Che Guevara planned by the CIA.

Beto sustenta a família trabalhando como contrabandista. Atravessa todos os dias a fronteira do Uruguai com o Brasil para comprar objetos encomendados pelos comerciantes de sua pequena cidade, Melo; uma viagem de 60km feita de bicicleta com o constante perigo de ter a mercadoria apreendida na fronteira. Os moradores de Melo são informados que o Papa fará uma visita à pequena cidade e que mais de 20 mil brasileiros são esperados para o evento; os habitantes planejam ganhar dinheiro com a visita vendendo comidas e souvenires, mas Beto acredita ter uma ideia única, que o fará ganhar mais dinheiro entre todos e realizar seu sonho: comprar uma moto para fazer a viagem penosa de todos os dias.

In Uruguay, where he lives with his wife and son Thomas, Orlando Vargas suffers from pressure from the government. Permanently watched by a policeman, Orlando seems not to care about danger. He decides to leave with his family to go to Josefina, the last village by the sea before Brazil. There, things move faster: on the day of his arrival, Orlando fails to return home.
