Universidade do Texas, Austin. Dexter Cornell (Dennis Quaid) é um professor de língua inglesa que se vê no meio de vários crimes, envolvendo pessoas ligadas a ele. Dexter tem um bom motivo para querer achar o assassino mas não tem muito tempo, pois descobriu que foi envenenado por uma toxina de lento efeito. Dexter não sabe quem fez isto nem o motivo. Enquanto tenta desvendar algo, recebe ajuda e consolo de uma aluna, Sydney Fuller (Meg Ryan), que o acha brilhante e não entende por qual razão parou de escrever.
