Com diálogos intensos e lances teatrais, a história gira em torno de um triângulo amoroso, vivido entre um jovem mimado, uma moça e um homem mais velho. Foi baseado em uma peça de teatro de sucesso do próprio Cocteau, que manteve o elenco original para a gravação do filme.
