Elling has lived with his mother all his life. Mom is the practical one, while Elling ponders the more theoretical aspects of life. He spends his time in their apartment reading books and looking at the neighbours through the living room window. Elling doesn't seem to need to be around others like most people. That's why Elling is less than enthusiastic when his mother suddenly decides to take her son on a beach vacation to Spain. Reluctantly, Elling agrees. After all, a lady at her age needs a good man by her side. But what Elling refuses to realize is that Mom is not only old, but also sick. Very sick. On her last vacation she tries to get Elling to see that life is bigger than their living room.

Um programa de socialização faz com que ele vá viver num apartamento em Oslo com outro doente mental da mesma idade, Kjell Bjarne (Sven Nordin). No início até as atividades mais corriqueiras, como ir à esquina ou atender ao telefone, se tornam grandes desafios. Mas aos poucos a dupla vai se adaptando à nova realidade, perseguindo seus objetivos: enquanto Elling se descobre um poeta, Kjell Bjarne procura uma mulher para perder a virgindade.

John and Siri Lill are a couple who have been together for most of their forty something years, but are yet to be married. He works for a newspaper, and is a heavy drinker. She is a respected hairdresser, working for Birger, a commom friend. John, usually, bottle-in-hand is an ace at being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Tired of John's drinking, Siri decides to leave him and move to her parents' house. John's drinking then worsens, and their apartment becomes a mess. Siri decides to return to her and John's place, and that's when the Absolute Hangover really begins with a vengeance.

There he finds a lack of leadership and morale that offends him. They even laugh at him and his out-dated uniform and officer-rank. He will fight for the country he loves and do his duty.
