With the discovery of an incoming asteroid, the government of America formulate a plan to destroy it. When the plan fails, all the world can do is wait. The main impact zone is revealed to be Dallas, Texas. Generally, the plot follows the lives and reactions of several characters: an astronomer, her father, her son, two firefighters from Kansas, two young doctors in Dallas and the heads of the government agency in charge of the situation.

A plataforma é usada para a "Operação Salvo", a operação de resgate que visa resgatar a tripulação do Montana, pois apesar de saberem onde está o submarino um furacão se aproxima e, assim, a Marinha não terá tempo hábil de chegar ao local. Com isso, a equipe da plataforma se torna a melhor opção para realizar o salvamento, ficando acertado que o tenente Coffey (Michael Biehn) supervisionará as operações. Entretanto, Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), um mergulhador que chefia a plataforma, diz à operação que acaba de pressentir que sua equipe corre perigo, mas Brigman não poderia imaginar que iria se deparar com algo totalmente surpreendente.
