Nova Iorque, 1974. Chris (Clive Owen) é libertado da prisão por bom comportamento, após ter passado vários anos fechado numa cela. De regresso à liberdade e ao “mundo real”, Chris é acolhido pelo seu irmão mais novo, Frank (Billy Crudup), que entretanto se tornou num polícia promissor e que acredita que o seu irmão pode ser reabilitado.
