Toshirō Mifune (Qingdao, 1 de abril de 1920 — Tóquio, 24 de dezembro de 1997) foi um premiado ator japonês, nascido na China. Em 1954, 1955, 1956 estrelou a Trilogia: Musashi, baseado no romance de Hideji Hōjō, dirigido por Hiroshi Inagaki que venceu o Oscar de melhor filme estrangeiro na edição de 1955, representando o Japão. Como o bandido de Rashomon (1951), obra do mesmo diretor que ganhou o Oscar de melhor filme estrangeiro em 1951, foi reconhecido internacionalmente. Tornou-se popular graças aos papéis de samurai que representou sob a direção de Kurosawa, em filmes como "Os Sete Samurais" e "Yojimbo" (1960), pelo qual conquistou o prêmio de melhor ator no Festival de Veneza.

Kansuke Yamamoto is a samurai who dreams of a country united, peaceful from sea to sea. He enters the service of Takeda, the lord of Kai domain. He convinces Takeda to kill the lord of neighboring Suwa and take his wife as a concubine. He then convinces the widow, Princess Yu, to accept this arrangement and to bear Takeda a son. He pledges them his life. He then spends years using treachery, poetic sensibility, military and political strategy to expand Takeda's realm, advance the claim of Yu's son as the heir, and prepare for an ultimate battle with the forces of Echigo. Ao lado do amigo Matahachi, o jovem órfão Takezo deixa seu vilarejo para se juntar ao exército e enfrentar uma batalha. Vendo-se perdedores, os dois procuram abrigo numa casa isolada onde vive a viúva Oko e sua filha Akemi. Oko acaba seduzindo Matahachi, que cai na tentação da mulher e se esquece de seu noivado com Otsu. Logo Oko, Matahachi e Akemi partem para viver em outro local, enquanto Takezo resolve voltar ao seu vilarejo. Lá ele narra os acontecimentos à família de Matahachi, que além de não aceitar os fatos ainda condena o jovem Takezo por traição. Ele será salvo da morte por um monge que irá ensinar ao rapaz o código dos samurais. O destino acaba colocando Otsu e Takezo no mesmo caminho. Apaixonada, ela promete a ele que irá esperar seu retorno como um cavaleiro errante.

At an inn high in the Japanese Alps, Eijima and Nojiri encounter a young woman and her father, as well as Honda, a mountaineer. The inn folk do not realize their guests are wanted criminals and the visitors are treated with great kindness. Honda volunteers to lead them over the mountains, but Eijima's paranoia endangers all of them as they make the perilous trip.
