Thomas Sams
O professor Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman) é convidado pelo seu amigo Frank Napier (Robert Guillaume) a assumir o cargo de diretor em uma problemática escola de Nova Jersey. Autoritário e arrogante, Clark comanda com pulso firme e com métodos pouco ortodoxos, as vezes até violentos. Dessa forma, ele consegue com que alguns alunos da escola, que sofre com problemas de tráfico de drogas e violência, passem no exame de final de ano realizado pelo governo. Mesmo fazendo o bem para os alunos, seus métodos contraditórios atraem admiradores mas também inimigos.
