Zhao-ping, a young Chinese artist, lives in an artists’ community near Bejing with his Japanese girlfriend Hana. One day he sees a black square floating in the sky. When the object lands, a bewildered naked man appears from it. He looks Japanese, but he doesn’t know who he is, or where he came from. Zhao-ping takes him under his wing. Is it an alien visitor? With the older Sakurai having sacrificed himself to ensure Airi’s future, Yuuto struggles with his own role in their story. City of Life and Death takes place in 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Imperial Japanese Army has just captured the then-capital of the Republic of China, Nanjing. What followed was known as the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, a period of several weeks wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

Hasegawa is writing a sequel to his previous novel, based on a true character who murdered 9 people on the street, with the premise that the killer had a brother. The main character in his new novel, Harumi, drops out of high school and leads a quiet life, unable to understand his brother. He is scared that the same blood runs in his veins but is also enraged by the fact that his brother’s life is consumed as material for novels by many writers. A novelist, Hasegawa faces limitations in making being able to make fiction as real and cruel as it is in reality. Hasegawa hears from a witness how a murder happened but he cannot be sure if it is a true event or from her imagination. One day, Hasegawa encounters Harumi… This is an obscure yet attractive film that extends its style from Kurosawa Kiyoshi to David Lynch. The title, A Bao A Qu, comes from a shapeless being that earns its shape as the pilgrim of a true heart near him featured in Indian religion and The Arabian Nights.

The film is told in three acts, beginning with a historical background of Japan's student movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, mostly using archive footage and a narrator. The second act follows the formation of the group to their mountain training camps in the southern Japanese Alps. It emphasizes the dogmatic (and eventually hypocritical) bullying of the group by Mori and Nagata, with 12 members being killed for infractions as small as improperly cleaning a gun, wearing make-up, and kissing. The third act shows the splitting up of the group after two members run off. It follows one group of five members to Karuizawa and a hostage-taking and police standoff known as the Asama-Sansō incident.

Nine former members of a high school baseball team reunite for the first time in seven years, invited to meet again by an unknown figure. The friends begin to reminisce about times gone by, but soon realize that there are discrepancies among their memories. When they decide to open an old time capsule to dig up the truth, they find that the box they buried now has ten keyholes instead of nine; a mystery that only a tenth person could have the answer to.

Young lovers Mari and Atsushi elope to the Big City that is Tokyo, unfortunately when they run out of money, both need to make some harsh choices. Mari stumbles upon selling ‘Party Tickets’ (for Swingers parties to be exact…), before being drawn into the sex industry to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Atsushi becomes a ‘Scout Man’ – effectively a recruitment agent for the sex industry (i.e. procuring young women for nude modelling, porn movies etc.). The consequences of their respective decisions will ultimately take it’s toll on their young lives.
