A long weekend brings four women together in the countryside. Virtual strangers, the women are forced to navigate the depths of social interaction. On the surface all seems placid. But the atmosphere of calm is a facade.

Tom Stark (Kevin Bacon) é um engenheiro que trabalha no sistema ferroviário. Triste e amargurado, ele dedica todos os seus esforços no seu trabalho para esquecer que sua esposa Megan (Marcia Gay Harden) está com câncer terminal. Um dia, uma mulher chamada Laura Danner (Bonnie Root) se suicida nos trilhos da ferrovia que Tom trabalha. A partir deste incidente o engenheiro passa a desenvolver um laço de afeto com Davey (Miles Heizer), filho de Laura, que acaba de ficar órfão.
