Considerado um dos melhores cineastas, e um dos mais brilhantes intelectuais do séc. XX, Kieslowski surgiu no traumático período comunista. Após um breve flerte pelas artes cênicas, ele completou a faculdade de Cinema em 1969 na legendária "Lodz Film School", na Polônia. Em seguida, ele iniciou sua carreira como documentarista. Até mesmo hoje em dia, olhando para trás, alguns podem identificar um tom satírico em seus documentários, além da maneira espontânea como ele expôs a claustrofobia típica da vida em regime comunista na Europa Oriental, no auge da "Guerra Fria".
