In summer, the Portuguese countryside is ravaged by fires. Otilia struggles between her job as a pool cleaner and the need to take care of her mother alone. Stunned by this suffocating daily life, the flames awaken in her solitude, despair and the desire to escape.

Adaptation by the director Inês Oliveira from the traditional Portuguese tale «O Sapo e a Rapariga». The laundry room is closed and a young woman (Rita Cabaço) has to learn how to wash clothes by hand with the wise Deolinda (Isabel Ruth), who tells her a strange story of enchantment.

O filme é uma reflexão muito atual e quase serena sobre o caminho comum das sociedades europeias de hoje, sobre o isolamento, a perplexidade diante das dificuldades que surgem, sobre a vida nas cidades e dentro das famílias. É uma tensão crescente que nunca explode.

Jorge de Sena foi forçado a deixar seu país. Primeiro se mudou para o Brasil, e mais tarde para os Estados Unidos, sem nunca voltar para Portugal. Durante seu exílio de 20 anos, ele manteve uma correspondência epistolar com Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

In early 1985, the writer Nuno Bragança hands his friend Carlos Antunes a 13 question’s questionnaire; 13 sheets of graph paper, of which he offered the recto-verso of each for his friend to answer. The questions were about Carlos Antunes’ personal and political career, with a special interest in his involvement in the Revolutionary Brigades and the armed struggle against the dictatorship that led to his arrest in 1978. The untimely death of the writer, in the same year, left the questionnaire unanswered and some uncertainty as to its purpose. After almost 30 years, the director asks Carlos Antunes to answer the 13 questions and to reconstruct the achievements, illusions and sorrows of the Revolutionary Brigades in Portugal, in the years surrounding the Carnations’ Revolution in 1974.

Portugal, 1944. Num país oprimido pela ditadura, há quem resista e se organize para mobilizar o povo para a luta pelo pão e pela liberdade. Mesmo que isso lhe possa custar a prisão, torturas, ou até a vida. Pessoas como Vaz, Ramos, António e Paula militantes e funcionários do Partido Comunista, que desenvolvem a sua acção na clandestinidade, reorganizando o Partido nas zonas dos arredores de Lisboa e do Ribatejo, ao mesmo tempo que preparam uma grande jornada de luta, com greves e marchas contra a fome.

Operação Outono é um thriller político sobre a operação que levou ao assassinato de Humberto Delgado pela PIDE em Fevereiro de 1965, em Villanueva del Fresno. O filme inspira-se em factos verídicos, alguns dos quais foram recentemente descobertos por Frederico Delgado Rosa, biógrafo e neto do General Humberto Delgado, e retirados do seu livro Humberto Delgado, Biografia do General sem Medo. A ação decorre entre Portugal, Espanha, Argélia, Marrocos, França e Itália, no período entre 1964 e 1981, desde a preparação da operação levada a cabo pela PIDE, e que tinha por nome de código: Operação Outono, até ao caso do Tribunal, já depois do 25 de Abril.

Esta versão da famosa história de “Les Diaboliques” de Barbey d’Aurevilly (1874) apresenta belas músicas clássicas, figurinos e convenções teatrais que resultam em puro cinema. Um rico e decadente homem do mundo conhece uma mulher das ruas excepcional.

Na noite de 19 de Outubro de 1921, um grupo de marinheiros e guardas republicanos percorre as ruas de Lisboa naquela que viria a ser conhecida como a "camionete fantasma". Liderado pelo cabo Abel Olímpio, conhecido pela alcunha de "Dente de Ouro", o bando assassina várias figuras políticas e militares, incluindo os heróis da revolução de 1910, Machado Santos e Carlos da Maia. Os crimes chocam o país. Os jornais chamam-lhe a "Noite Sangrenta".

Ao mesmo tempo que resiste aos seus avanços, o tímido rapaz alimenta um sonho: ser a incarnação do cantor Tony de Matos. Essa obsessão leva-o a inscrever-se num singular concurso de karaoke subordinado ao tema "Glórias do Nacional Cançonetismo", onde tem a possibilidade de dar vida à figura do seu herói. É no meio destas estranhas personagens que Jorge percebe que, afinal, não está só.

Após horas de submersão esperam a luz da manhã e a baixa da maré para poderem caminhar entre os bancos de ostras e chegarem a uma das duas ilhas aluviais, em direcção à margem. Mas a longa espera e a temperatura gelada da água deixou-os com os corpos debilitados e os pensamentos turvos. In order to make some much-needed cash for himself, 65-year-old Portuguese prison inmate Eugenio impersonates a young woman and begins a romantic correspondence with a lonely Portuguese truck-driver living in Boston, convincing him that her tragic life has culminated in financial dire straits so he will send money. At first Eugenio's sister Idalina assists him in creating the character of Maria da Luz. Touched by her sweetness and apparent loving nature, the trucker willingly sends her money. When Idalina starts fearing they will be caught, she backs out of her arrangement with Eugenio who then convinces his young cellmate Vasco to help write the letters and even sends a picture of himself at age seven to "prove" that Maria has a young son. As prison life exacts an increasingly heavy toll upon Eugenio's health, his feminine alter-ego helps sustain him.

A violent relashionship.

Marking a stylistically and philosophically turn away from the earlier features, The Sand Rose is Reis and Cordeiro’s most abstract, conceptual and literary work. The film’s collage structure gathers texts from multiple sources – including Kafka and Montaigne – and crafts a world of theatrical artifice far from the documentary inspired naturalism of Ana and Trás-os-Montes. Reis and Cordeiro’s least known film has lingered in obscurity and never recovered from the unfairly negative reviews that resulted in its severely limited release. Reis died less than two years later, just as he and Cordeiro were about to begin an ambitious adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Parámo. - Harvard Film Archive
