Molly McGrath (Goldie Hawn) sempre desejou treinar um time de futebol americano, pois seu pai tinha sido um grande treinador e ela crescera neste meio, mas só lhe é oferecida a equipe de um colégio, que coleciona derrotas. Além disto os jogadores não querem ser comandados por uma mulher, assim Molly precisa ser primeiramente respeitada por seus comandados antes de transformar seu time em jogadores de verdade. Ela tem ainda que enfrentar a oposição do seu ex-marido, que ameaça tirar a guarda das filhas se ela continuar neste emprego.

A família Griswold está de férias e resolve ir para o "Walley Park", um parque temático. O pai Clark (Chevy Chase), sua esposa Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), e os filhos Audrey (Dana Barron) e Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) pegam a longa estrada de Chicago até a Costa Oeste. No meio do caminho, encontram com o primo Eddie (Randy Quaid) e a tia Edna (Imogene Coca), e acabam tendo que levá-la até Phoenix. Até os Griswold chegarem ao parque muitas confusões acontecem e, quando eles finalmente chegam, uma surpresa pouco agradável os surpreende.
