Problem is, archbishop Mordowicz, an opulent church official who uses his political influence to build the largest sanctuary in Poland, gets in his way. The second priest, Trybus, is a village parson. He ministers to a poor community and gives in to human weaknesses more and more often. Kukuła is not faring well either. Despite his fervent faith, he loses the trust of his parishioners actually overnight. Soon the stories of the three clergymen are going to join once again.

Bronisława Wajs (1908–1987), conhecida como Papusza, é a poeta cigana mais famosa do mundo. Tendo sua vida envolta em mistério na Polônia, ela ganhou fama devido ao talento para a poesia. No entanto, os próprios ciganos a amaldiçoaram por ter traído os costumes e os segredos antigos da sua cultura.

No mês de agosto de 1968 uma unidade do exército da República Popular da Polônia é enviada em uma "missão de ajuda fraterna" para a Tchecoslováquia. A unidade avança lentamente e seu tanque "Joaninha" desaparece logo após cruzar a fronteira. A suboficial Grążlowa (Eva Halubova), acompanhada por seu marido ciumento, pega uma moto e conduz uma perseguição tentando evitar ser punida pela bagunça de sua unidade. Ao mesmo tempo, ela quer pegar e humilhar seu amante, Romek (Przemyslaw Bluszcz), que havia a humilhado pouco antes da invasão.

Em 1939, quando a Polónia é invadida pela Alemanha Nazi, o pianista Wladyslaw Szpilman interpretava peças clássicas numa rádio em Varsóvia. O jovem pianista irá então partilhar o drama do povo judeu, testemunhando a sua transferência forçada para o gueto de Varsóvia e, depois, para os campos de extermínio. Determinado a sobreviver, foge do gueto dias antes da grande revolta que os alemães esmagarão com sangue. Com a ajuda de membros da resistência polaca, viverá uma existência de fome, solidão e medo, entre os escombros de um mundo que colapsa ao seu redor.

Marcus Vinicius encontra Lygia em Roma e se apaixona. Mas ela é cristã e não quer nada com ele. Marcus decide seqüestrá-la, mas Ursus, seu guarda-costas, captura Marcus. Depois disso, Lygia se apaixona, mas Marcus deve ir encontrar-se com o Imperador Nero. Após a reunião, alguém diz a Marcus que Nero queimou Roma. Marcus decide voltar a Roma e procurar por Lygia.
