과거에 대한 기억이 전혀 없는 알리치아는 새로운 인생과 정체성을 만드는 것에 성공한다. 알리치아의 가족들이 그녀를 찾아내지만 그녀는 기억의 일부가 되살아나기 전까지는 자신의 과거를 알고 싶어하지 않는다. 그녀의 두 가지 다른 정체성이 결합되면서 혼란을 초래하는 자아 발견이 이루어진다.

A few years back tragic events tied the fate of three Catholic priests. From then on they meet on every anniversary of the disaster to celebrate their survival. On an everyday basis they have their ups and downs. Lisowski works at the curia in a big city, has a career and is dreaming of the Vatican. Problem is, archbishop Mordowicz, an opulent church official who uses his political influence to build the largest sanctuary in Poland, gets in his way. The second priest, Trybus, is a village parson. He ministers to a poor community and gives in to human weaknesses more and more often. Kukuła is not faring well either. Despite his fervent faith, he loses the trust of his parishioners actually overnight. Soon the stories of the three clergymen are going to join once again.

파푸샤에 대한 실화 – 로마 여자로서는 처음으로 시를 쓰고 이를 출판하며 집시 공동체의 전통적 여성상에 맞서 나간다. 이 영화는 파푸샤의 출생에서부터 노년에 이르기까지 그녀의 생애를 따라간다. 어린 시절에 한 강제 결혼, 예전 집시로서의 생활, 2차세계대전과 그 이후, 그리고 공산 폴란드의 강제 정착 및 가난한 도시생활 등. 그녀의 위대한 재능을 알아본 폴란드 시인 예르지 피코우스키를 만나면서 그녀의 작품이 출판될 수 있었지만 이는 그녀를 비극적인 역설로 이끌어간다. 유명한 시인이 가난에 찌들어 살며 그들을 배신했다는 이유로 로마 지역사회로부터 배척당하게 된 것이다.

1939년 폴란드 바르샤바, 유명한 유대계 피아니스트 블라디슬로프 스필만은 한 인기 라디오 프로그램에서 쇼팽의 야상곡을 연주하다 폭격을 당한다. 이후 유태인인 스필만과 가족들은 게토에서 생활하지만, 결국 수용소로 향하는 기차에 몸을 싣게 된다. 가족들을 죽음으로 내보내고 간신히 목숨을 구한 스필만은 허기와 추위, 고독과 공포 속에서 마지막까지 생존해 나간다. 자신을 도와주던 몇몇의 사람마저 떠나고, 자신만의 은신처에서 끈질기게 생존을 유지하는 스필만. 어둠과 추위로 가득한 폐건물 속에서 은신생활 중 스필만은 우연찮게 순찰을 돌던 독일 장교에게 발각되는데...

Ancient Rome, during the time of Emperor Nero. Vinicius, a young patrician, falls in love with the beautiful Lygia, the daughter of a Barbarian commander who was killed in battle, and wants her for his concubine. For Lygia, a Christian, being a pagan's concubine is a severe sin and disgrace. However, when Vinicius is wounded, Lygia cares for him, and starts to reciprocate his feelings. Vinicius, in return, becomes interested in Christian learning and asks Apostle Peter to teach him. In the meantime, Emperor Nero accuses Christians of having started a great fire in Rome. He encourages the imprisonment, torture and murder of his Christian subjects.
