Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman), um detetive de Nova York, vai até Marselha, França, na tentativa de capturar Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey), um traficante de drogas que escapou entre seus dedos quando foi fazer um "negócio" em Nova York.
