Действие происходит во время Второй мировой войны в оккупированной немцами Украине. Во время столкновения на дороге сельский парень Василий убивает немецкого офицера. Немцы берут в заложники жителей села и требуют выдать парня. Проблема выбора встаёт перед односельчанами и самим Василием.
Учитель - биолог Тед и его жена Мэй берут двух своих дочерей и отправляются в летний домик на остров. Необходимо дать возможность мужу написать важную диссертацию и прийти в себя после смерти их сына. В это время огромные стаи птиц без видимых причин нападают на них. Местный шериф, а по совместительству и доктор, отказывается верить, что птицы виновны в нанесении таких серьезных ран и увечий. Но вскоре ему придется это сделать, так как птицы начинают нападать на более многочисленные группы людей...
