В средней школе Хигасигаока начинается новый учебный семестр. Внешне все как обычно, но в прошедшем семестре школа была потрясена чрезвычайным событием – один из учеников, Ногути, сын владельца местного магазина, совершил попытку самоубийства, не выдержав издевательств и преследований со стороны одноклассников. В своем «посмертном» письме он назвал трех учеников, имена которых не были преданы огласке. В результате инцидента Ногути перевелся в другую школу, магазин его отца закрылся, а классный руководитель Такахаси взял академический отпуск, надеясь, уйти от ответственности. Теперь в классе новый классный руководитель – Мураути. С первых же его слов ученики в шоке. Мураути – заикается. Но дефект речи не мешает ему пробиться сквозь плотную завесу лицемерия и умолчаний, заставить учеников признать неприятные для себя истины.
