На вилле в Монте-Карло со своими кузинами живёт бывший русский офицер Карамзин, выдающий себя за графа. Впрочем, возможно, он выдаёт себя и за офицера, а кузины - всего-навсего его сообщницы. А занимаются они сбытом фальшивых денег, поставляемых итальянцем Вентуччи. В Монте-Карло прибывает новый американский посланник. Карамзин с кузинами решают, что ему необходимо познакомиться с женой посланника, завязать с ней интрижку, занять у неё крупную сумму настоящих денег...

Jan Saxe and Peter Harlingen, two young men from Holland, arrive in America with little orphan Bertha Kruger whom they have befriended during the trip and whom they both love. Bertha has come to live with her blind Aunt Sophie, and when Jan secretly raises $500 for an operation to restore her aunt's sight, Bertha marries Peter, believing that he was the donor of the "secret gift."

Struggling artist Ned Templeton and his wife Joan are leading a poverty-stricken life in Paris. Threatened by starvation and eviction, Joan is forced to become a prostitute. After some time, Ned becomes successful, and he and Joan move to New York. There he meets Helen, daughter of wealthy art patron James Cartwright. Cartwright was the man who "bought" Joan in Paris, and when he learns that his daughter's happiness depends upon Ned's divorce, he threatens to expose Joan.
