Years later, Bernard looses his wife and disappears at sea. His daughter Germaine ignores her cousin Gaud and Yvonnic Lefranc. Richard also dies at sea. Germaine will bring grand-father Lefranc closer to his grand-children.

Jean Paoli recently betrothed to Evelyne Desprez, his boss's daughter, gets tuberculosis and has to go away to get rest and fresh air. He leaves for Corsica and has to break his engagement. A vendetta is declared and, soon afterwards, the groom is found dead on the road to Ajaccio, murdered by Michel, Catalina's father, who then hides in the maquis. Jean decides to join him there and his health gets better. One day, Michel is mortally wounded by the police and Jean learns that his father died too. He, Jacques and Catalina travel back to Paris so that his mother is not left alone. He finds that Evelyne took a new fiancé, Max Carlier, who surrenders after a fight. Evelyne and Jean get married.

Max meets the Countess Duvienne in a very distressing moment, for she has just learned that her jockey will be unable to ride her horse, the favorite for the owner's stakes. In that irresistible way of his, Max volunteers to ride in the jockey's stead, the countess thanks him but cannot accept his offer, because of his excessive weight. The gallant Max, nothing daunted, decides to reduce. After running a mile with a forty-pound dumbbell, he looks like a wet rag, but goes gamely to a Turkish bath. This treatment brings Max down to weight, and mounted on the countess' horse. Max fights every stride of the tight race, hut wins, not only the race, but the countess as well.
