Once upon a time in a village a dacoit named Daku Mangal Singh (Ranjeet) harasses the villagers for lagaan, When Inspector-in-charge Vijay (Girish Karnad) gets transferred to that village he encounters Daku Mangal Singh (Ranjeet) and makes a plan to set the village free of the menace. This story is about five criminals who were taken by the inspector-in-charge Vijay for help to the village. Inspector Vijay take those criminals at his own risk as the higher authority denies his approval. Daku Mangal Singh also exploits women in the village. Does Vijay succeed in his mission.

Anuradha is an orphan who has found a mentor in kind-hearted Mahesh Kumar Gupta. She decides to re-locate to the city and be close to him in Bombay. After a few misadventures, and being rescued by a gallant Kishore, she settles down with Gupta, who would like her to marry his son, Raj Kumar. Anuradha has fallen in love with Kishore, but does not want to upset Gupta, and so she accordingly agrees to this marriage. Then Raj brings home a beautiful young woman named Usha, who he has fallen in love with and got married to. After a few temper tantrums, Gupta does accept Usha as his daughter-in-law. What Gupta does not know is that Usha has married Raj to inherit his vast wealth and estate and be close to her lover, Prem Kishen, who also has an on-going affair with Anuradha. Things get really complicated when Prem is killed, and Anuradha is arrested by the police for killing him.

Shankar lives a poor lifestyle along with blind sister, Paro. He works as a locksmith. When his company shuts down he works freelance and is anxious to save enough money so that Paro can regain her vision and get married.

Kuku Rai belongs to a wealthy family, and lives with her businessman dad and housewife mom. The later move to Goa, where a Goan couple looks after them, but soon decide to go back home and confront the situation.

Kindly Dr. Gupta (Ashok Kumar) is preparing to retire, and hopes to marry his daughter Jyoti (Zarina Wahab) to his associate Dr. Anand (Parikshit Sahani). Mukesh has his eyes set on the good life, but unknown to Jyoti he is already married to Geeta (Sarika), whom he abandoned with a child when he found out she was Anpadh (illiterate). Dr. Gupta has an accident one night, injuring a woman named Geeta and brings her home to recuperate. He teaches her how to mingle with high society, dress and eat properly, and ensures the education of her son. In return for his decency and compassion, Jyoti prepares to marry Dr. Gupta. When her father arrives for the festivities, he recognizes Mukesh.

A social drama, it tackles the contradictions prevalent in society. Kumar, a respectable wealthy man to the outside world, in fact leads a life of debauchery. The boy, has a happy re-union with his mother, whom he considered all along to be dead.

Kamal, a governess, falls in love with Ashok. Things, however, take an odd turn when Ashok marries her friend, Radha. Soon after the marriage, Radha meets with an accident.

Dr. Sarin lives with his wife, Sunita, young daughter, Rekha, and his brother, Rajesh. Rajesh is an eligible bachelor, and on the lookout for a life-partner with a view of marriage.

Radha lives with her widowed dad and is of marriageable age. Accordingly her details her provided to a marriage-broker, Avtar, who also doubles as a Ved (Village Doctor). He brings the proposal before Shriram and his wife, Sita. They approve of Radha and show her photograph to Shriram's brother, Dr. Madhu, who agrees to marry her. The marriage is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony in the entire village. Sudha Verma wants to be the ideal daughter for her dad, and mom. All approve of the marriage, until Rajesh sees the invitation card for Sudha's marriage, and realizes that his marriage has been arranged with Sharda, and that Sudha is to marry Rakesh. Rajesh attempts to straighten this out, but idealistic Sudha does not agree as she does not want to embarass her dad.
