В одном из рабочих кварталов начинается дружба еврейского мальчика Момо и пожилого мусульманина Ибрагима. Момо — сирота при живом отце, все глубже погружающемся в разрушительную депрессию. Его единственные друзья — уличные женщины, хоть немного заботящиеся о заброшенном ребенке. Иногда Момо ходит за покупками в бакалейную лавку, тесную и темную, тихий владелец которой Ибрагим, человек экзотической внешности, видит и знает явно больше, чем кажется на первый взгляд. After World War II, a small French village struggles to put the war behind as the controlling Communist Party tries to flush out Petain loyalists. The local bar owner, a simple man who likes to write poetry, who only wants to be left alone to do his job, becomes a target for Communist harassment as they try and locate a particular loyalist, and he pushes back.
The recolonization of Africa, this time by the very blacks who had to flee it as exiles during the time of the original French occupation, is the theme of this political comedy. Adiza, who has been living well in France, has decided that she will return and buy the plantation she and her compatriots were expelled from, and enlists some unlikely helpers to bring them back into the country and enact their plot. Meanwhile, these "local" blacks are unwittingly accepted by the other landowners as more cheap labor.
