Klaus Berger is a committed journalist who reports to the local department of the Erfurt daily newspaper. Since the death of his wife, Klaus alone is taking care of his eleven-year-old daughter Anna, so that he has his hands full with his job and child care. He does not have enough time for Anna. A woman who could take something away from him is missing in his life. Emma returns home to Cornwall to her father, Ben Litton, a successful albeit rather self-centered painter. Emma is reluctant to be welcomed by her father and will leave her there for a week after her arrival. So Emma remains lonely again until Robert, the gallery owner, wins her heart.

Olga and Ruth become friends. Olga is independent, separated from her husband, living with an immigrant pianist, and teaching feminist literature. Ruth is withdrawn, a painter, possibly mentally ill. Ruth dreams in black and white, sometimes of her suicide. Olga lectures on a 19th-century writer, von Günderrode, a suicide after the breakup of her intense friendship with Bettina Brentano. Ruth's husband Franz encourages the women's friendship, then, as Olga draws Ruth out and the friendship deepens, he becomes jealous. After the women travel to Egypt, Franz has a tirade. Ruth seems crushed between her husband and her friend, and how she responds is the film's climax.

Based on the classic 19th century tale by German writer/composer E.T.A. Hoffmann, the film investigates the tale's themes of obsession and madness, emphasizing expressionist imagery and theatrical style. The story relates the life of the young student Nathanael, whose childhood memories are haunted by a sinister man. As a child, Nathanael believed this dark figure to be the mythic Sandman, who puts children to sleep by stealing their eyes. When confronted by this same evil presence as an adult, he is pushed toward madness as he tries to confront his childhood fears.
