Based on a book by Machado de Assis (1839-1908) and adapted to the present time. After the death of the philosopher Quincas Borba, his friend and disciple Rubiao inherits all he possessed: his fortune, his dog, his philosophy and the germ of his madness. Rubiao's passion for Sofia, a friend's wife, places him at the center of a game in which she is the main piece while he is the only one who ignores the rules. The story of a dreamer and delirious man facing a reality to which he is not prepared.

И только через два года режиссёр написал оригинальный сценарий, по которому в 1981 году был снят фильм «Завоевание рая», ставший первой полнометражной картиной Субиелы и заложивший основу его неповторимого стиля. С той поры в каждом своём фильме режиссёр говорит о любви и смерти, о невероятном переплетении прошлого и будущего. И непонятно, чего в этих фильмах больше: музыки, поэзии или космоса.

A group of migrants from the drought areas of Northeastern of Brazil gets a truck "pau-de-arara" trying to move to São Paulo and have a better life. Along their travel, one of the women delivers a baby on the road. The driver, indeed, intends to carry them to the slave-work in the fields of a powerful "colonel", but the brave Ana faces the foreman of the farm and the driver, and the truck follows to the hired final destination.
