In an unusual, apolitical approach, director Jaromil Jires has fashioned a standard drama that features an older lawyer with failing health who goes to practice in the countryside. His series of odd court cases reveals more about the human condition than about law. In one of these litigations a wayward nephew has cheated his elderly aunt out of her savings. In court, the nephew insists the money was a gift, but his aunt explains she only gave him the money as a loan. Although the lawyer technically wins the case, everything of value seems lost in the meantime. His services are paid for in rabbits because the aunt has no currency, and in the end, the nephew cons his aunt into parting with her savings anyway. Other cases expose similar types of petty corruption.

It is the summer of 1968 and also in South Moravian Pálavice appear political clashes. The so far peacefully farming Unified farmers' cooperative starts splitting. Some of the farmers have found the cooperative called Vidrupa and want to deal with wine in private trade. Michal Janák, chairman of the farmers' cooperative is a deliberate man and refuses the latent return to the capitalism. As an excellent farmer he continues preparing planting out new vineyards. His adversaries do not agree - the returns will come many years later. Jozka Hrdlicka, an émigré, notices on the Austrian TV the interview with the representatives of Vidrupa and decides to visit his native village. The new suit and the hired car transform the bankrupt and criminal to the successful businessman with wine.

Twelve-year old Kosta, a little boy of an overactive imagination, makes friends with equally sensitive eleven-year old Blanka. Fantasy leads the two children to the forgotten attic in the house of Blanka's parents. For them, this is the forbidden "thirteenth chamber," and to Kosta, an old glass vase becomes a magic ball with the help of which he can play his favorite play "on fate". The children observe the adults and unconsciously sense that something has gone wrong in Blanka's family. Her dad is a physician and her mother is not happy with him, still recollecting her former wooer Petr who left for India upon his graduation.

It is 5 May 1945 and the uprising against the hated German occupiers has broken out in Prague. The Czech guards open the gate of the Pankrác prison to allow the prisoners to escape en masse. Many of them are shot dead by the German guards but young Ruda (Jaromír Hanzlík) manages to run away. He is taken care of by one of the Prague fighters, concierge Kytka. Kytka hides him in the flat of the house's owner where only the young maid Karla (Jana Brejchová) is left, ordering her to take care of Ruda.

1951 год. В пражском аэропорту совершил посадку спецрейс из Вьетнама. На его борту граждане Чехословакии, воевавшие ранее на французской стороне в составе Иностранного Легиона в Индокитае, перешедшие затем на сторону Вьетнамской Народной Армии...

Место действия фильма - жилой дом на одной из конечных остановок трамвая. В доме живут разные люди. Они даже мало знают друг друга. Герои фильма: студентка Иржина, фармацевт Мартинец, алкоголик Пешта, у которого есть дочурка Ганичка, воспитывающаяся у бабушки - привратницы дома. В доме живут бездетные супруги, молодая женщина, муж которой находится в заключении, и другие жильцы. Иржина, одинокая девушка, случайно познакомилась с фармацевтом Мартинецем и полюбила его. Узнав, что у Иржины будет ребенок, Мартинец повел себя как бездушный эгоист. Судьбы других обитателей дома незаметно переплетаются между собой. Здесь и печальная одинокая старость бездетной пары. Приютив дочурку пьяницы Пешты, они искренне привязались к ней. Здесь и любовный роман между летчиком и женой арестованного инженера. Здесь и драматический эпизод поисков пропавшей Ганички. Забота о чужом ребенке пробуждает в Иржине материнские чувства. Она решает по-новому начать свою жизнь, разойдясь с эгоистом Мартинецем.

Leopold Kohák married a rich widow a long time ago and now has nothing to do compared to his energetic wife. He's growing old and troubled by the fact that he betrayed his first love Emča and his beloved river Sázava where he spent his childhood and youth. A visit from an old friend Lebeda brings it all back to him. After a nervous breakdown Leopold secretly visits his home instead of going to the spa. A wandering tramp suggest Leopold should bathe in the magical waters of the Sázava, and slowly his youth returns to him.
