Трогательная история о 8-летнем Вашике, который всю жизнь мечтал стать альпинистом, как и его папа, погибший в горах под лавиной еще до его рождения. Смышленый мальчишка всеми силами старается найти для своей хрупкой мамы-балерины нового мужа. Поиски не дают результатов, ведь «все порядочные мужчины уже давно женаты»… Поездка в горы на каникулы знакомит Вашика с начальником горной службы, с которым они быстро находят общий язык и удивительное взаимопонимание. Увидев однажды нового друга своего сына, мама Вашика внезапно меняется в лице.

Honza Pavelka (Jan Hrusínský) wins the junior motorbike speed races. His thirteen-year-old brother Martin (Roman Cada), his assistant and biggest fan, answers the questions of his schoolfriend Pavlína in a superior tone. Student Zuzana (Libuse Safránková), who gave her scarf to Honza to wear around his neck for the races as a talisman is Honza's girlfriend. He met her when he came to her parent's home to repair the TV set. Honza declines an invitation to celebration with his friends. He goes off with Zuzana instead, but she refuses his intimate advances. The offended young man, who is about to serve his two years in the army, tries to blackmail her emotionally and the couple breaks up. Martin tries various schemes to bring them together again.

It is the summer of 1945. A party of young people are enjoying the beginning of a new life to the full. For them this is the year one. One of them, law student Pavel, is more attracted to film than to law. With his eight-millimeter camera, he films everything that catches his attention. One day he captures an interesting face on film, a girl with an air of mystery. Pavel visits the girl, whose name is Helena, and meets hers and her elder energetic sister Olga. From Olga, he learns that the girls have spent the years of German occupation in a concentration camp and cannot forget the horrors they have lived through.

After returning home from the army, Vasek (Ladislav Potmesil) has married Bozka (Eva Trejtnarová) and the couple now live at her parents' house. Vasek is unhappy both with his work and with sharing the house with Bozka's parents. He and his friend Ruda (Oldrich Vlach) decide to take a temporary job in Ostrava for a year. Bozka is against this, but Vasek gets his way. Mining is hard work but Vasek gradually adapts to it. He gets homesick from time to time and wants to go back, but his pride always wins out. Once he really does travel back to see Bozka, but he doesn't find her at home.

A fisherman saves Anada, a woman adrift, from drowning. He takes her to his home, and protects her. Eventually, she occupies a larger place than was to be expected. He commits adultery with her, but his own wife seems to be in love with the strange young woman.

Учитель латыни пражской гимназии Малек непоколебимо верил, что в каждом человеке, кем бы он ни был, есть то хорошее и благородное, что включает в себя понятие «высший принцип». Но, столкнувшись с гестаповцами, которые за незначительный проступок расстреляли трех его любимых учеников, старый учитель понял, что место честного человека — в лагере активных борцов против угнетения, насилия и террора.
