Li Meixin rejects Du Ziping's marriage proposal on the eve of Du's departure to further his studies in Japan. Li joins a travelling troupe under Jin Shiming and becomes a success overnight. While performing in Singapore, Li discovers she is pregnant. For the sake of Li and the unborn child, Jin marries Li. Due to financial losses, Jin's troupe is disbanded. Du returns from Japan and is invited to play the male lead opposite Li in a new troupe. Caught in a dilemma, Li dies in a fall while running away from Du.

1918 году где-то на пограничных территориях между русским Дальним Востоком и китайской Маньчжурией покинувшие после революции Россию певцы и музыканты «императорского театра», во главе с басом Дмитрием Паниным, попадают в дом японского коммерсанта Сумиды. В благодарность за гостеприимство русские артисты исполняют романс Глинки, символически посвящая в мир русской музыки крошечную Марико, дочь коммерсанта. Нападение китайских хунхузов заставляет гостей и хозяев спешно бежать, и в перестрелке погибает жена Сумиды, сам он оказывается тяжело ранен и отстаёт от остальной группы. Растерявшие друг друга во время нападения беглецы оказываются в Харбине. Раненый коммерсант Сумида, отчаявшись найти певца Панина и узнать что-либо о своей жене и дочери, уезжает в Японию, а затем на южные острова.

The Opium War is a 1943 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Masahiro Makino. "Ahen senso" in Japan refers to the First Opium War. The story of the film concerns this war.

A 1942 Jidaigeki by the veteran jidaigeki filmmaker Kunio Watanabe about the legendary warrior Musashibo Benkei with Hideko Takamine portraying Minamoto no Yoshitsune (who is, of course, a man). The film climaxes in the famous encounter/fight btw Benkei and Yoshitsune at the Gojo Bridge.

Wartime propaganda filmed by the Japanese in occupied China, Shirley Yamaguchi portrays an orphan rescued from the streets by a kindly Japanese merchant marine officer. Part spy thriller and part Shanghai travelogue, it was part of a popular series known as "Chinese Continental Friendship" made by the occupying Japanese in China.
