At the beginning of the 1960s, when the French pioneers of cinéma vérité set out to achieve a new realism, and when direct cinema in Québec began to vie for notice, the Baltics wit-nessed the birth of a generation of documentarists who favored a more romantic view of the world around them. This meditative documentary essay – from a Latvian writer and Lithuanian director whose composed touch has long dovetailed with the stylistically diverse works of the Baltic New Wave – pushes adroitly past the limits of the common his-toriographic investigation to create a portrait of less-clearly remembered filmmakers. The result is a consummate poetic treatment of the ontology of documentary creation. Also a cinematic poem about cinema poets.

В основе фильма - воспоминания Героя Социалистического Труда профессора Ивана Васильевича Комзина, бывшего начальника строительства Волжской ГЭС имени В.И. Ленина; Героя Социалистического Труда экскаваторщика В. Клементьева; заслуженного экскаваторщика Виктора Васильевича Старикова; писателя Константина Кирилловича Лапина. Куйбышевские документалисты снимали фильм об экскаваторщике-герое труда Борисе Егоровиче Коваленко. Материал получился слишком неоднозначным для того, чтобы сделать фильм о примерном советском рабочем человеке. За советом обратились к рижскому документалисту Герцу Франку. Он сделал досъёмки и смонтировал собранный материал так, что получился рассказ без легенд об обычном человеке.

дин из первых самостоятельных фильмов Герца Франка — 15-минутный юмористический репортаж о концерте артистов Малого театра на строительной площадке под Ригой, в котором «зрелищем» стали в основном сами строители. Фильм снят одновременно четырьмя камерами, и в нем проявилась самая характерная черта творческого почерка режиссера: стремление к созданию на экране целостного пространства и ощущения непрерывно текущего времени.

Первый совместный художественный фильм Фрейманиса и Селецка - важный краеугольный камень в истории латвийского документального кино, яркое подтверждение того, что новое поколение победило «старую гвардию», потому что молодые и непокорные Фрейманис и Селецкис объединили юбилейный фильм, и он стал своеобразным юбилейным фильмом. концентрат образной поэтики, формирующий образ Латвии из фрагментов емких метафор.
