The event was headlined by a women's bantamweight bout between former UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm (USA) and multiple-time Muay Thai world champion Valentina Shevchenko (PERU).

The event was headlined by a UFC Bantamweight Championship rematch between current champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champion Renan Barão. UFC on Fox 10: Henderson vs. Thomson, took place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Thomson, the No. 4 lightweight in the UFC, will battle former champion Benson "Smooth" Henderson. Originally, Thomson was slated to take on Anthony "Showtime" Pettis, but the lightweight champion had to pull out due to a knee injury. Now, Thomson and Henderson will battle for the right to be next in line when Pettis returns to action.

The main event featured a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between the current champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. Co-featured on the card was a rescheduled Interim Bantamweight Championship bout between the current champion Renan Barão, and former WEC Bantamweight Champion and top contender Eddie Wineland. The pairing was first planned as the headliner at UFC 161, but was removed from that event after Barão injured his foot. Mark Bocek was expected to face Michel Prazeres at this event. However, Bocek pulled out due to an injury and was replaced by UFC newcomer Jesse Ronson. Ivan Menjivar was expected to face Norifumi Yamamoto at the event. However, Yamamoto was removed from the bout and was replaced by Wilson Reis.

The second of the title fights was for the WEC Featherweight Title, between challenger, Dominick Cruz and champion, Urijah Faber.
