В основе фильма – два величайших творения русского гения: повесть Николая Гоголя «Нос» и опера «Нос», которую создал в 1930 г. композитор Дмитрий Шостакович. Фильм посвящен пионерам, новаторам в искусстве. Людям, которые опережали свое время. И, что самое главное, имели бесстрашие идти против течения. Ценой собственного благополучия, а зачастую и жизни. Главными героями фильма являются писатели Николай Гоголь и Михаил Булгаков, режиссер Всеволод Мейерхольд и композитор Дмитрий Шостакович.

Кинопутешествие в мир Наума Клеймана и его соратников. Клейман, всемирно известный специалист по творчеству С. Эйзенштейна и до недавнего момента директор Музея кино в Москве, — один из самых видных интеллектуалов в сегодняшней России. Он верит, что с помощью кино можно сделать свободнее и благороднее и отдельную личность, и общество в целом. С 1989 года в музее представлялась не доступная ранее советскому и российскому зрителю классика мирового кино. Для многих Музей кино стал важным местом культурного общения. Но впоследствии судьба музея, неразрывно ассоциировавшегося с именем Клеймана, сложилась, как известно, драматично. И фильм, среди героев которого и соратники Клеймана, и просто москвичи, становится документальным коллажем, отражающим действительность сегодняшней России.

"Tracing Battleship Potemkin" goes on to detail the extensive number of shots long lost from constant authorized and unauthorized re-cuts in the last 80 years, and how many of those shots have been returned. Indeed, the film is all the more powerful and lyrical with a number of key scenes (especially the famed "Odessa steps" sequence) filled out and shaded with emotional nuance.
