Мел Гибсон играет мелкого преступника, похитившего большую сумму денег, после чего попавшего в мексиканскую тюрьму, где и начнётся основное действие картины. В тюрьме царят вполне демократические порядки — можно носить оружие и употреблять героин. Также есть традиция брать у новичков кровь, дабы найти донора для спасения печени местного авторитета. Десятилетний мальчик, который впоследствии окажется спасен Гибсоном, — очередной кандидат в доноры. Попутно придется вернуть отобранные при аресте деньги и отомстить кое-кому, оставшемуся на свободе.

Three flatmates in Mexico City face uncertainties: Lucía who has a great job as an art director for TV commercials is abusing alcohol and cocaine. She risks losing her job, going to prison for assault, and she's woefully in love with a bullfighter who may be two-timing her. Carmen, an artist without income, can be manic - snorting lots of cocaine and hanging out with a gay man and a transvestite. What's her future? Hanna contemplates divorce from Abraham, a wealthy momma's boy, and she's disoriented by feelings of attraction to Sandra, a customer at her jewelry store. Can any of these poor little rich girls sort things out in a world of excess?

In 1910, John Flinders is warden of Red Rock Territorial Prison, in Arizona. When a condemned man's last request brings Flinders into contact with the man's widow, Flinders finds himself falling in love. Meanwhile, a new convict, Mike Sullivan, turns out to be an old friend of Flinders'. They talk over old times, but it's clear that Sullivan has plans to leave the prison before his time is up. When those plans come to pass, Flinders sets out to re-take his old pal.
