В своем фильме Кустурица пересказывает знаменитую легенду, посвященную Пабло Пикассо. Во время оккупации Франции Пикассо оставался в Париже. Якобы в мастерскую Пикассо с обыском пришел некий немецкий офицер и, увидев репродукцию «Герники», спросил: «Это сделали вы?» «Нет, — ответил живописец, — это сделали вы». Дипломный фильм, в котором Кустурица был режиссёром, сценаристом и оператором, получил главный приз на фестивале студенческого кино в Карловых Варах. Это двадцатипятиминутная лента, снятая Кустурицей еще в годы учебы в на режиссерском факультете знаменитой пражской киношколы FAMU — рассказывает историю мальчика из еврейской семьи. С трудом понимающий реалии окружающего его мира ребенок интуитивно приходит к осознанию ужаса происходящей вокруг него немецкой оккупации сквозь призму знаменитой картины Пабло Пикассо.

Один из основополагающих фильмов югославской «новой волны» 60-х годов, «Три» Петровича – это военная драма, состоящая из трех эпизодов жизни молодого человека во время Второй мировой Войны. Утонченный и разнообразный кинематографический язык (от крупных планов до массовых сцен), мастерская операторская работа, изысканные, но минималистские психологические портреты персонажей, довольно неординарный подход к военным событиям (для того времени), - все это делает этот фильм бесспорно одним из самых великих югославских фильмов всех времен.

The film has two stories. Story 1: A group f partisans, fighting against the enemy and harsh winter storm, comes to the village where locals are hostile to them. Story 2: One night during the war, a daughter of railway station chief helps the wounded partisan commander to escape; however Germans discover her deeds, and kill her.

A group of partisans goes to destroy a German gas warehouse at Postojnska Jama. One of them grows distrustful towards the new commander, and it spreads among the rest of the squad. The situation culminates when the mentioned partisan remains cut off inside a cave.

During the Battle of Sutjeska, headquarters one of the a partisan detachment, decides to enter deeper into the forest to save a few soldiers and wounded from inevitable death. Commander of the detachment, sent a group of fighters in the reconnaissance. As time goes on, the Germans are getting closer to discovering the detachment and wounded, hunger, exhaustion, forcing people to surrender, but at the time of surrender, and when the Germans discovered detachment, there is a sudden rescue from the group that was in the field reconnaissance.
