Grev Rambow har mistet sin formue og må nu bo til leje sammen med sine tre døtre, Beate, Marie og Annette. Grevens eneste håb er, at døtrene gifter sig tilbage til fordums rigdom. 1838: Fritz Jüterbog and Ottilie von Henkeshofen love each other, but the difference in status is too great for Ottilie's parents to give their consent to a marriage. And so Fritz sets off for America and returns from there 20 years later as a made man to ask for Ottilie's hand in marriage again. In the meantime, however, Ottilie - believing that Fritz had long since forgotten her - is married in a manner befitting her status, but very unhappily. Fritz, who is highly successful as an entrepreneur, is elevated to hereditary nobility because of his great services to the fatherland. It is too late for a union with Ottilie, but despite the years that pass, the two cannot forget their love. 75 years later, Fritz and Ottilie have died in the meantime, their grandchildren Fred and Tilla meet and fall in love.

At a ball at the Metropol, the married Margit gives a harmless kiss to a one-time friend from her childhood and cousin, Eberhard. The two notice, however, that Margit's ill and jealous husband observed them from a distance, because he recognized the coat she recently purchased. Quickly, Margit asks the salesgirl Trude to put on her coat and meet Eberhard in the lobby. Things take a decidedly different turn, however, when Trude and Eberhard fall madly in love with each other.

When the baroness surprises the baron with his mistress at the music hall, he passes off young Marcel, a clothing salesman, as an important customer.

Young Anny returns from school to her circus family, which runs a little venue at the town fair. When Anny suddenly has to fill in for one of the artists, her piano-playing not only enthrals the audience, but also theatre agent Hobbes. He casts the whole family for the Apollo theatre in Berlin, where Anny quickly raises to stardom and is offered an engagement from the US.
