These songs are the roots of Estonia’s renowned singing culture. Based on the continuous repetition of eight-syllable verses, they produce a haunting sound able to connect the fleeting present with the eternal circle of life. В основе фильма - действительные события периода первой русской революции. Руководителя музыкального общества Бернхарда Лайпманна из Вигала (волостной центр Эстляндской губернии Российской империи), во время революции 1905 года выбирают делегатом эстонского крестьянского съезда в Тарту. Он пропагандирует среди крестьян идеи социализма, убеждая их в том, что в результате революции они получат землю. Крестьяне захватывают помещичью усадьбу и сжигают её. Для подавления бунта приходят карательные войска и Лайпманн предстает перед судом. Его приговаривают к розгам, но, предпочитая смерть позору, он требует, чтобы суд заменил это наказание расстрелом.
