Antoine, a boy living in Northern France at the outbreak of World War II, takes on the challenge of defending the family home after his father is drafted and sent to the Maginot Line. With the aid of his accomplices, war veteran Grandpa and imaginary friend Napoleon, Antoine digs trenches and stands guard by an old cannon in the front yard. Tensions mount just as the Nazis break through the Maginot Line, and the invading troops pass in front of the family home.

This is a splendid little sleeper of a movie. Ernie Kovacs was one of the giants of early television. I think he would be pleased with the way Jeff Goldbloom captures his wonky personality. Melody Anderson also distills that of Edie Adams. There is a very basic heart tugging story about the search for Kovacs' two abducted daughters. But at the same time the film is funny --- Cloris Leachman is a hoot as Kovacs impossible mom --- and has many of the offbeat and innovative qualities of the old Kovacs show itself.

This follow-up to "The Bastard" and "The Rebels" continues the account of Philip Kent's life and career from his emigration to colonial Massachusetts through the American Revolutionary War and concludes the family saga with the story of his two sons and their children as they arrive in the unexplored Northwest Territory. (Episodes 5 and 6 of the Kent Chronicles miniseries.)
