Lu Sheng

Tianyu is a blind child who dreams of a life very different from the one planned for him by his mother. Strange as it may seem, she wants to turn him into a table tennis champion. When the boy disappears one day, his mother sets out in search of him, and she soon understands that she needs to hear and feel what her son sees in order to find him. Thus, she too must enter a world of darkness.

In Shanghai, a young restaurant worker becomes drawn to a troubled young woman and tries to care for her. In Paris, a young Chinese student is robbed of his passport. He receives unexpected help from an elderly compatriot who knows the ins and outs of their new city.

Октябрь 1960 года, пустыня Гоби, лагерь Миншуй, часть трудового лагеря Цзябяньгоу. Правые уклонисты и интеллигенты копают канаву, то и дело умирая от недоедания. В связи с временными трудностями построения социализма, то есть по причине отсутствия поставок продовольствия, лагерников отстраняют от работы, отправляя искать себе пропитание в пустыне. Поймавший крысу — счастливец, его с утра не заберёт похоронная команда, тот, кто собрал немного зёрен дикорастущих трав, не так уверен в завтрашнем дне. Дальше будет хуже — зима, смерть, каннибализм. И страшная жизнь в лагере.

While the two never speak to one another, the girl captures her appearance and life changes during the years through various means such as photos and drawings.
