Сюжет фильма «Сердцу хочется кричать» разворачиваются вокруг учеников старшей школы, которым предстоит участвовать в программе по работе с населением. В центре событий оказывается молчаливая девушка Нарусэ Джун. В детстве ей довелось очень тяжело пережить расставание родителей, и с тех пор она перестала разговаривать. Благодаря воле учителя она так же оказывается участницей программы, вот только Джун и другие ученики не хотят принимать в этом участие. Совместные трудности начинают сближать нашу героиню с парнем Такуми, который не побоялся за нее заступиться в школе. Вместе они должны принять участие в мюзикле и несмотря на то что Джун всегда была серой мышкой ей предстоит перебороть себя и выступить на сцене.

Gin is a 15-year-old boy. He knows that his father is a gay and he wonders if he might be the same. Narumi is a 15-year-old girl. Her mother tells her she should prostitute herself. Narumi decides to go to her father in Tokyo. Gin tells Narumi that he is going as well. The two 15-year-olds set out on a trip to Tokyo.
Tetsuo Togami (Shono Hayama) is in the 2nd grade of high school. Due to a fight, he is hospitalised. There, he meets Maiko Takashiro (Chika Arakawa). She has an incurable disease. She also has a hearing disability and is unable to talk. At first, Tetsuo becomes embarrassed, but begins exchanging text messages with Maiko. Through the text messages he begins having feelings for her. Even after his discharge from the hospital, he goes to visit Maiko everyday. They promise to go out together on Maiko's birthday, but her condition worsens.

Junior High School Student
Meiko Inoue is a recent college grad working as an office lady in a job she hates. Her boyfriend Taneda is permanently crashing at her apartment because his job as a freelance illustrator doesn't pay enough for rent. And her parents in the country keep sending her boxes of veggies that just rot in her fridge. Straddling the line between her years as a student and the rest of her life, Meiko struggles with the feeling that she's just not cut out to be a part of the real world.
