Действие происходит в XIX столетии в японской деревушке, пораженной голодом. Чтобы не умирать голодной смертью, жители ввели ритуал умерщвления бесполезных членов сообщества: новорожденных мальчиков просто убивали, а пожилых людей их собственные дети относили на вершину горы Нараяма и оставляли умирать. Орин - женщина 69 лет должна умереть. Ее сын не хочет выполнить ритуал, но того требует мать, верная традиции. Найдя жен своим детям, она начинает последний подъем на вершину, привязанной к спине сына.

Inaba Junior High School's baseball team has been defeated miserably since the senior members left. Because of their poor results, the players are suspended from games and are almost forced to break up. Ironically, however, this hardship makes them band tighter together and intensifies their desire to play. They practice hard in the hope of regaining the respect of the other students and teachers. Soon, their will-power leads them to unbelievable victories. This story portrays the boys' dreams and friendship through baseball.

Komori Tiaki is a budding tennis student, however one day in training her coach hits the ball into her eye accidentally. She is taken to hospital but it advised that she will never regain the sight in her eye. Her coach knows of a mysterious doctor 'Blackjack' who lives in a secluded house, who might be able to help. 'Blackjack' agrees to do the operation, but for a 'substantial reward'! Her sight is regained, but now she starts to see a mysterious man that is invisible to those around her....
