Уникальность "Миссии на "Мир"" на сегодня составляют единственные в своем роде съемки сейчас уже затопленной орбитальной станции "Мир". Большая часть работ по сбору материалов для фильма проходила с марта по сентябрь 1996 года в рамках проекта на орбите Земли. Снимали, вооружившись камерами IMAX, сами же космонавты, на освоение которых у ребят ушло по 25 часов. Остальное - результаты работы совместной русско-американской съемочной группы во главе с продюсерами Тони Майерсом и Грейми Фергусоном. И они впечатляют: сняты все этапы проекта включая запуск, стыковку, совместную работу космонавтов на борту станции и приземление.
