Poor countryside girl Elza has been unsuccessfully looking for a job in Riga before she gets help from an acquantance. After that, fortune seems to turn and rich aged factory owner Ķikulis wants to marry Elza. Reluctant at first, she finally agrees but the marriage doesn't got smoothly.

Героиня фильма Ася работает в столовой Рижского стекольного завода. Она любит вырезать из дерева фигурки и хочет научиться обрабатывать стекло, как ее муж и все их друзья. Но Улдису увлечения жены кажутся несерьезными. Он равнодушен и к бедам своих товарищей по работе, думает больше о своей карьере. В этой ситуации Ася увлеклась мастером с их завода Валтером, в прошлом неудавшимся художником, который оценил ее произведения. Она решила уйти от мужа, но оказалось, что Валтер неспособен оценить чистое, искреннее чувство Аси.
