13-year-old Nico is badly beaten by his brother while playing with fireworks. To gain revenge, he steals his brother's cat. Unable to return home, he meets up with some other kids, and they head to the railway track where two of the boys commit an act of mindless brutality. Nico is compelled by the frenzied horror of earlier events to join in. As the day draws to a close, the boys break up and head home and Nico is left to contemplate his actions.

Laddy and the Lady follows an out-of-control golden retriever, owned by a Lady, on a pheasant shoot. Scenes of the shoot are intercut with flashbacks to Laddy’s troubled past as a puppy, wrenched from his mother’s side. On the shoot, Laddy is subjected to forms of physical and verbal abuse associated with gun dog handling. His inability to behave and retrieve the dead birds results in relentless punishment. Laddy becomes a receiver – a golden receiver- of abuse.

Reluctant Jennifer must bathe her mischievous grandmother. Once close, they are now virtually strangers. The enforced intimacy of the situation results in an awkwardness that they can neither deny nor overcome until they begin to play together in the water.
