В основу фильма положены действительные события, происшедшие осенью 1941 года в Югославии. Озлобленные героической борьбой патриотов, гитлеровцы проводили зверские репрессии в ряде югославских городов, уничтожая всё мужское население в возрасте от 16 до 60 лет. В фильме рассказано о том, как подобная расправа была проведена с учениками и преподавателями одной гимназии. Расстрелян целый класс мальчиков, готовящихся в следующем году получить аттестат зрелости.
