A young man named Josef visits a dilapidated Sanatorium to see his father Jakob. On his arrival, a sinister doctor informs him that his father had stopped breathing but hasn't died yet, perhaps due to Josef's arrival which may have halted time in the sanatorium. Josef undertakes a strange journey through the many rooms of the sanatorium, each which conjures worlds composed of his memories, dreams and nightmares.

По роману Яна Потоцкого. Во времена Наполеоновских войн молодой офицер находит рукопись, относящуюся к истории его дедушки, капитана гвардии испанского короля Альфонса Ван Вордена. Альфонс - человек чести и закалки, ищет короткую дорогу через дикие горы Сьерра-Морена. В гостинице Вента Кемада он встречает двух мавританских принцесс. Они называют его кузеном, потомоком могущественного рода Гомелесов, говорят, что он избран для великих целей и соблазняют его. На следующий день он просыпается возле виселицы на которой висят два трупа. Затем он встречает священника-отшельника и пастуха. Каждый рассказывает ему по истории. На следующий день он опять просыпается возле виселицы. Его приключения продолжаются. Он чудом избегает инквизиции и слышит массу разных историй, в основном о любви. В конце концов он возвращается в Вента Кемада, где его ждут принцессы с потрясающими новостями...

The adventures of the tenants of a sublet room in a Warsaw townhouse inhabited mostly by students and novice writers, presented against the social context of the 1930s.
