Dramatisation of the Stephen Downing case which involved the conviction and imprisonment in 1974 of a 17-year-old council worker, Stephen Downing, for the murder of a 32 year old legal secretary, Wendy Sewell, in the town of Bakewell in the Peak District in central England. Following a campaign by a local newspaper, his conviction was overturned in 2002, after Downing had served 27 years in prison. The case is thought to be the longest miscarriage of justice in British legal history, and attracted worldwide media attention.

В ХIХ веке для маленького еврейского городка в Польше появление железной дороги стало последней каплей, переполнившей чашу всеобщего терпения: мало того, что на полях неурожай, а в умах односельчан растет неверие, так еще и торговля идет из рук вон плохо. Зачем путешественникам останавливаться в их городке, если можно проехать мимо на поезде? Бедный Саймон, юродивый, иногда выполняющий несложные поручения за кусок хлеба или рыбу, становится для всех козлом отпущения. Его винят во всех бедах, да и сам он уверен, что получает инструкции к действию от самого дьявола. Но настоящее зло таится в голове Хэйза, богатого дельца и чужака — христианина, который хочет построить железнодорожную станцию и использует Саймона в своих корыстных целях.
