Годы нэпа. На окраине Москвы счастливо живет семья Тыркиных. Петр работает у мясника-частника Кондратьева. Надежда ведет хозяйство и воспитывает двоих маленьких детей. В том же доме у дальней родственницы Варвары живет сирота Люба. «Тетка» эксплуатирует, бьет девушку, за деньги помогает соседу совратить ее и в конце концов «за упорство» выгоняет на улицу. Здесь Люба попадает в цепкие руки сводни, которая заставляет ее подписать кабальную расписку. Несчастье обрушивается и на семью Тыркиных. Трагически погибает Петр. На бульваре она встречается с бывалой проституткой Манькой, которая рассказывает ей о своей судьбе. Когда Манька работала горничной, ее соблазнил сын хозяйки. Выгнанная на улицу, она попала в дом терпимости. Следствием стала венерическая болезнь, от которой Манька лечится до сих пор
