Viramundo shows the saga of the northeastern migrants that arrive in São Paulo, beginning with a train arriving and ending with a train leaving São Paulo in a cycle repeated every day. Viramundo's aim was to question why the military coup d'état in Brazil happened without any popular resistance or revolution or reaction of the society.
Director
The only film by Yugoslavian-Brazilian journalist Vladimir Herzog, this cinéma verité short subject is the result of a film course taught by Swedish documentary filmmaker Arne Sucksdorf in Brazil, in 1962. A report about the so-called "Marimbás", who aren't exactly fishermen, even though they live of the sea, have their boats and do their fishing on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. The film briefly presents their stories, methods, and how they manage to sell their products to costumers right there on the same spot in which they fish.
