Ekaterina Eremenko

This is a picture about the creator of non-Euclidean or hyperbolic geometry, the Russian mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky, and his scientific discoveries. The scientist is widely known for showing that Euclid's fifth postulate about parallel lines may not be respected. Nikolai Lobachevsky was also a successful rector of Kazan University. A living portrait of a mathematician who lived in the XIX century appears in the form of observations of experts from Berlin, Göttingen and Kazan, demonstrating the impact of his discoveries on modern science.

Для оценки результатов было приглашено жюри из шести экспертов в области искусства, моды и архитектуры. Можно подумать, что в отличие от красоты математической художественная красота может быть оценена без полного понимания. Неожиданно математическая строгость сменяется художественной, и уверенность учёных в красоте собственных исследований вступает в противоречие с мировоззрением современных художников.

More than 100 years ago, explorers raced to discover the South Pole. Now scientists are racing to discover the secret subterranean world of rivers and lakes buried miles beneath it. In 1974, scientists made a sensational discovery: a vast lake underneath the icy desert of Antarctica, untouched for 400.000 years, Lake Vostok. In spring 2012, after 40 years of drilling, Russian scientist broke through the ice. In two different narrative strands the film tells the story of the evolution of life and climate, the story of four decades of exploration in the coldest place on Earth, and it accompanies the scientists on their final trip to the camp. The film also explores the mythologies and legends surrounding Antarctica – from H.P. Lovecraft to James Cameron: the ‘Mountains of Madness’ have lured many into their realm – not many left unscathed.

A golden future lay ahead of them, but the birth of perestroika and the collapse of the old order meant that that future was no longer certain. Eremenko sets out to discover what happened to her classmates and how the seismic political changes of the 1980s affected her generation. (Storyville)
