Действие фильма происходит в конце 40-х годов в Эстонии. Закончилась война, началась мирная жизнь, но нет у людей покоя и уверенности в завтрашнем дне. Каждую ночь из домов исчезают люди, которые еще вчера мирно жили со своими семьями, ходили на работу, шутили и смеялись. Так исчез водитель автобуса Пюсс и родители мальчика Хейки. Но все же дети остаются детьми, взрослые окружают их любовью и заботой, а малыши, не догадываясь о трагизме происходящих вокруг них событий, живут спокойно и счастливо
